    Product Description

Insullite® Recessed Light Cover Insullite is a fire retardant cover designed to allow the installer to insulate safely and effectively around recessed lights. Research has shown that without proper insulation, areas around recessed lights can allow a large amount of heat energy to enter/escape from a building. However, insulation placed too close to lights can also be a fire hazard. When installed, Insullite allows insulation to be placed as close to the light or heat producing fixture as possible without the risk of fire. The Vented Insullite models (IL10 and IL12) were the original products made by the manufacturer, Insulation Solutions. These models focused mostly on Fire Protection and a bit less on weatherization.
    • Allows insulation to be applied around and on top of light fixtures
    • Easy installation
    • Compatible with all types of insulation
    • Manufactured from post-consumer recycled paper products
    • Fire retardant
    • Dimensions: 10" x 10" x 12"

coated cardboard box, but it works!
Just so nobody is surprised, these are really just cardboard boxes coated in a special type of wax fire retardant as approved by ANSI, which requires rigorous testing before putting a product to use. I suppose you could build your own, but there is no way to tell if your experiment is actually fire retardant until it is too late.

    Wasted money
Nothing but cardboard box sprayed with fire retardant, buy boxes for 10% of the cost buy a can or bottle of retardant. If I did it again I would buy the pressed rock wool type or cardboard box but cures gated cardboard is a roach magnet and now I have 25 of them in my attic. Also, not any explanation as to when vented versus non-vented is best application.

Are these airtight? I need one that will stop air infiltration into the attic through the can light.
