Rinnai 104000059 Kit with Freeze Protection Solenoid Valve For Outdoor Units in Cold Regions When electricity is interrupted the solenoid valves will shut cold water off and drain tankless to protect heat exchanger Rinnai Installation Kits - Valve kits provide isolation valves (for hot and cold lines) and a pressure relief valve. Models RV53e, RV53i, RL75i/e, RL94i/e, RC80i/e, and RC98i/e include isolation valves and a pressure relief valve.
How does it work? what happens when there is an extended cold spell?

Freeze protection comes standard on all Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters. As long as there is both power and gas supply to the appliance, freeze protection guards against outside temperatures as cold as -4° F (-20° C) for outdoor models and as cold as -22°F (‐30°C) for indoor models. The Solenoid valve shuts cold water off and drains tankless to protect heat exchanger. If you live in a warm area the outdoor tankless is suggested, however if you live in a cold area you should stick to an indoor unit. It is very hard for the indoor unit to ever get to a freezing point at -22°F. In such scenarios the shutting down of a tankless should not be for an extended period of time
